The victory of Gujrat in 1849 marked the end of the second Sikh War and the final establishment of British rule at Peshawar. Colonel George Lawrence became the first Deputy Commissioner of Peshawar, and under his orders the Guides were sent to restore law and order in the area inhabited by the Yousafzai Tribe.

Inside the Cantt area, the inhabitants are of different tribes/caste/religions which includes Yousafzai, Khattaks, Mohmand, Punjabi, Christian, Hindu etc.

The majority residents are low income generating families. Mardan Cantt is situated at a distance of 24 KMs from Nowshera and 123 Kms from Swat/Mingora.
